Could she have been asexual? Suffering from a physical illness? Paralyzed by religious anxiety? Maybe to all of the above. It's hard to know the truth at this point. For what it's worth, The Emily Dickinson Museum makes the case, speculative as it may be, that there may have been both men and women in her life that were romantic.

In portraits of Elizabeth I, she was often surrounded by virgin imagery and presented almost as a semi-divine figure. In 1559, she told Parliament, “I have already joined myself in marriage to a husband, namely the kingdom of England.”  Smart move, Elizabeth!
