At the Netflix Is A Joke festival last week, Jerry Seinfeld quipped that NBC recreated his eponymous TV series with “good-looking people” to launch the uber-popular ’90s sitcom “Friends.”

“Seinfeld” premiered on NBC in 1989; “Friends” premiered in 1994 on the same network. Both series follow single friends living in New York City.

“I think NBC was watching my show and went, ‘Hey, this is working pretty well,’” Seinfeld said, according to Entertainment Weekly. ”‘Why don’t we try the same thing with good-looking people?’ And that was a pretty good idea. I think that kind of worked.”

Seinfeld, who was talking to “Seinfeld” co-creator Larry David and “Rushmore Podcast” host Ben Persky, also revealed his top episodes of the show: “The Contest,” “The Soup Nazi,” “The Merv Griffin Show” and “The Marine Biologist.”

This isn’t the first time “Friends” and “Seinfeld” have made headlines together.

In a 2022 interview with The Daily Beast, “Friends” star Lisa Kudrow credited “Seinfeld” for helping the show reach bigger audiences.

“The first season, our ratings were just fine,” Kudrow said, explaining that it wasn’t until “when we were in reruns after ‘Seinfeld,’ where ‘Seinfeld’ was our lead-in, where we exploded.”

“I remember going to some party and Jerry Seinfeld was there, and I said, ‘Hi,’ and he said, ‘You’re welcome,’” Kudrow continued. “I said, ‘Why, thank you… What?’” And he said, ‘You’re on after us in the summer, and you’re welcome.’ And I said, ‘That’s exactly right. Thank you.’”
