Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) on Wednesday championed President Donald Trump during an appearance on Fox News for making America “much safer” by launching the Iran war — mere seconds after warning that the threat of terrorist attacks on U.S. soil is “higher now.”

Cruz made the case during an appearance on “Hannity” after more than a decade of calling for an end to diplomatic relations and said, “This decision to attack the regime in Iran is the single most important national security decision made by President Trump.”

He continued, “By taking out the ayatollah, his top military leaders, the ballistic missiles, the drones, his naval force, all of that is making America much, much safer. And by the way, all of the clowns who go on and on and say this is for Israel? Understand, this is for America.”

When asked at the very top of his interview about a recent report that Iranian terrorists were plotting drone attacks on California, however, Cruz said, “Well, Sean, as we sit here right now tonight, the threat of terrorist attacks is higher now than it has been in decades.”

The Texas senator made no connection between the Iran war, which has already resulted in the deaths of at least seven U.S. military service members and more than 1,200 Iranians, including dozens of schoolgirls, and the report of potential terrorist blowback in America.

Cruz instead blamed former President Joe Biden for this apparent increase in terrorist threats, claiming his “open borders” policy allowed untold terrorists to flood the U.S., and was skewered by critics for saying America is now both “safer” and facing “higher” danger.

“Oh, for fuck’s sake,” wrote one user on X, with another arguing: “It’s quite the opposite: we were fine until Donald started bombing Iranian schools and murdering children. Creating thousands of martyrs and activating sleeper cells. Even MAGA can see that.”

A third person suggested, “Rafael, there is one reason the US is facing a heightened threat of a terrorist attack - because Crazy Pants Donald Trump made the unilateral decision to bomb Iran. Are you really that surprised that Iran may retaliate.”

ABC News on Wednesday reported that Iran has “aspired” to attack California using unmanned aerial vehicles, citing a nebulous FBI alert noting that the agency had “no additional information” on any of the following: “the timing, method, target, or perpetrators.”

CBS News senior White House reporter Jennifer Jacobs confirmed later that day, however, that multiple U.S. and state law enforcement officials told her colleague, homeland security correspondent Nicole Sganga, that “there is no credible intelligence” behind the alert.

“What makes Cruz’s statement so irresponsible is the way it weaponizes anxiety,” one person wrote Wednesday on X. “Instead of grounding the claim in intelligence, data, or context, it uses the specter of terrorism as a political accelerant.”

Cruz has been a staunch proponent of the Iran war and on Wednesday echoed the Trump administration narrative that Iran has been rebuilding its nuclear weapons program, despite Trump himself announcing just last summer that these facilities had been “obliterated.”
