“Late Show” host Stephen Colbert on Tuesday reacted after President Donald Trump was asked about the worst-case scenario in Iran after Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei was killed in a U.S.-Israeli attack on the nation that is still underway.

“And his answer was not the best,” Colbert said.

Trump said the worst case would involve someone taking over in Iran who’s just as bad as Khamenei.

“That could happen,” Trump said. “That would probably be the worst. You go through this and then in five years you realize you put somebody in who was no better.”

Colbert agreed.

“Yeah. That could happen,” he said, then offered an example straight out of recent history: “Sometimes, you get a really bad guy out of office, and then, like four years later, you get the same guy back and he’s somehow worse.”

The audience erupted.
