Of course, there's no better place to begin than with Troy, the film that depicts the 10-year battle that precedes Odysseus' great journey. With an ensemble cast featuring Brad Pitt, Eric Bana, Orlando Bloom, Diane Kruger, Sean Bean, Brian Cox, Brendan Gleeson, Rose Byrne, and Peter O'Toole, it is totally a worthwhile watch. While the movie didn't receive the most outstanding reviews, it's fun, engrossing and full of epic battle scenes, hand-to-hand combat, a sweaty, glistening Brad Pitt and, of course, a giant wooden horse...

This movie is based on a novel of the same name by Sol Yurick, which was inspired by Xenophon's Anabasis, the expedition of the Ten Thousand, an army of Greek mercenaries hired to seize the throne of Persia. This retelling, however, is set in New York, where the members of a gang named the Warriors are framed for the death of the respected leader of another gang. They must get back to their home turf while rival gangs are out to seek their revenge.

This is probably the most popular and well-known adaptation of Homer's The Odyssey, but it's such a unique interpretation, in true Cohen brothers fashion, that it won't feel repetitive next to Nolan's vision. Set in the Deep South of the USA in the 1930s, we follow three escaped convicts in their search for hidden treasure. Their paths cross with mystical and interesting characters, and their pursuit of riches is hindered by the law, which continues to track them down.

While set in a completely different time and place, Interstellar will definitely give you some of the Christopher Nolan x epic journey feeling that The Odyssey is likely to evoke. We follow farmer and ex-NASA pilot Joseph Cooper (Matthew McConaughey), who, with Earth becoming uninhabitable, is tasked with piloting a spacecraft, along with a team of researchers, to find a new planet for humans. A long-distance journey across new terrain, meeting obstacles along the way... sounds familiar. Oh, and there's even Matt Damon trying to get home in there too!

This high-octane post-apocalyptic film isn't a retelling of The Odyssey, but it does form a sort of similar rhythm of someone on a journey through hostile territory, encountering dangerous trials after dangerous trials, and having to navigate and overcome threats at every turn. While the setting and certainly the costumes couldn't be more different, the pacing and overall arc of the main characters share some similarities, and it's also just a great film.

This wartime epic is more analogous to Homer's Odyssey; while it isn't a direct retelling, the hero's journey is easily paralleled. We follow Inman, a Confederate soldier, who, when leaving the battlefield, must undertake a long, treacherous journey home to Cold Mountain.

One of the many beautiful films from Studio Ghibli, Princess Mononoke follows the journey of the last Emishi prince, Ashitaka. Ashitaka must embark on a journey to unknown, dangerous lands in order to cure himself of a curse. On his way, he gets entangled in disputes between gods, spirits, and humans. It's worth a watch for the magical, wondrous nature of the world alone.
