The box comes with a motor base, blade, blade block, blade block cover, blade block shaft, two one-pint cups, and two lids. 

(The black specks are unincorporated instant coffee granules that got blended).

To make vanilla gelato, I heated heavy cream, milk, vanilla, and a pinch of salt over low heat. I then slowly combined some of the hot mixture with whipped egg yolks and sugar, before returning everything to the heat to slowly cook for five more minutes. Finally, I put the mixture in the cup to freeze before churning.

I did have to blend the ingredients (in an actual blender, not the ice cream machine) before freezing, which is more labor-intensive than making ice cream, but on par with the gelato, which requires heating the egg yolks and cream mixture over the stove. But this would be the case with using any machine.
