I still don't believe it(!!!) but here is the explanation: "I know exactly what that is, the bracket that holds the fan motor in place, has two mounts with little rubber vibration isolating bits with the mounting bolts, and the fact that it looks like this from that angle is kind of hilarious and kind of scary. To finish off the look, somebody did a horrible, roundish, jagged opening instead of a nice, clean square cut for the darn thing."

There is a logical explanation, but it still is creepy as hell (pun intended): "We call those 'Hell Halos' in rural Indiana. When a big piece of diesel machinery starts up, you'll have rings of oily black smoke puff up like that as the motor chugs to life."

Well, it is because unsettling holes in tree trunks are primarily caused by a combination of wood-decay fungi, wood-boring insects, and animal excavation. The stress on the tree just gets worse with time, unfortunately.

Underground houses were common a few decades ago, as someone else shared, "We had one of these in our town since the '80s. I was told there was a fire and the house was lost and the people decided to just keep living in the basement. It was just a door to nowhere. Eventually a few years ago they built a house over it. The basement must be huge."

This can happen when a sewer line is broken or when there is root intrusion. Yikes!
