“I feel so bad for the little black girls of today.”

As a Celebrity Reporter, I cover everything from fashion and award shows to TV, film, and cultural conversations.

According to Variety, the film will follow Galleria and Chanel, along with Galleria's daughter, Faith (played by Leah), and her three friends (played by Carmen, Kaileen, and Sophie), as they travel to Africa to volunteer at a wildlife sanctuary.

Carmen and Kaileen are respectively of Mexican and Latinx/Taiwanese descent, while Sophie is Northern Irish.

“I feel so bad for the little black girls of today,” someone wrote, while another person said, “My daughter will NOT be watching The Cheetah Girls: Whitewashed Gen.”

yall havent been paying attention when we said they were getting rid of black girls on screen

Some might argue that in recent years, the recasting of some white characters in remakes as non-white has been heavily praised — but the difference is that Black representation has never been “the norm” in Western media, and the majority of white characters being recast as non-white has stemmed from the desire to make representation more diverse.

On the flip side, one person argued, “if it helps, The OG cheetah girls are actually still them in this. This is Galleria’s daughter and her friends, who are different ethnicities. So we should be thankful they didn’t try to reboot them at least.”

“One is Asian, one is Hispanic, one is black and one is white. Actually more variety and representation than the OG,” someone else wrote.

In response to this, many people pointed out that the original Cheetah Girls series centered Blackness. "i’m actually glad you brought that up! cause as consistently as Black Americans are expected to make room for 'actually more diversity' for white AND nonwhite people y’all sure asf haven’t been representing Black characters as well as Black filmmakers represent you," one person said.
