(NewsNation) — Republican Senator Mitch McConnell has yet to return to politics after being hospitalized three weeks ago.

McConnell, the longest-serving senator in Kentucky history, was admitted to the hospital June 14, and little has been said about why.

He was first elected to the Senate in 1984 and was the Republican leader from 2007 until 2024, serving as both majority and minority leader during that period.

McConnell, 84, was admitted to the hospital on the morning of June 14, per his office.

According to audio of an emergency medical services dispatch call, paramedics arrived at McConnell’s Washington, D.C., home

They responded to a report of an unconscious person who was believed to have suffered a “cardiac arrest.”

A medic on the scene said there was a “CPR in progress” at McConnell’s home.

McConnell’s office confirmed he “was admitted to the hospital” and was “receiving excellent care” but did not confirm the nature of his condition.

McConnell remains in hospital, according to his staff, but the nature of his condition remains unknown.

According to a statement by his office Monday, he is on the mend.

“Senator McConnell appreciates the outpouring of support he’s receiving while he continues his recovery in the hospital. The Senator continues to improve, and is working closely with his staff on Kentucky and Senate matters while the Senate is out of session,” the statement read.

Kentucky Democrat Charles Booker, who is running for McConnell’s seat in November, has called on greater transparency regarding McConnell’s health with little known about whether the 84-year-old is able to continue in his position.

“Like every Kentuckian, I am concerned about the health of Senator Mitch McConnell. While I am certain he is receiving excellent care, I know from personal experience the fear and uncertainty our family and loved ones feel in the wake of a medical emergency,” Booker said in a statement Thursday.

“It’s time we know what’s happening. When we don’t know if our senator is alert, conscious, or capable of serving, that’s not a partisan question. It’s a Kentucky one.

“What is clear is that we have known for some time that Mitch McConnell has lacked the capacity to represent us in the Senate. That fact, along with the developing news now, is deeply concerning. “Continuing to ignore this is not leadership. It’s elder abuse. And it’s time for him to relinquish the business of Kentucky back to the people,” he added.

Booker won the Democratic primary in May and will face off against Republican Rep. Andy Barr in November.

McConnell was hospitalized with a concussion in March 2023 and missed several weeks of work after falling in a Washington hotel. After he returned, he twice froze up during news conferences that summer. A year later, he fell and sprained his wrist while walking out of a GOP luncheon.

Before stepping aside from his position, McConnell was the longest-serving Senate leader in history. His final term was set to end in January.
