Right-Wingers Go Nuts Over Mamdani’s Science-Backed AC Guidance Amid Heat Wave

Saturday is expected to be the Big Apple’s hottest July 4 in the last 20 years, but a request by New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani to set air conditioners at 78 degrees is making a lot of right-wingers hot under the collar. In fact, many are acting like the suggestion is the first step to godless communism taking over America. In order to avoid straining the power grid, Mamdani asked New Yorkers to set ACs at the recommended level, turn off lights and electronics that are not in use and unplug “what you can.” “Our City is doing its part too: maintaining the 78 degrees rule in our buildings, dimming/turning off our lights during peak electricity demand, asking private partners to do the same, and powering down non-essential equipment,” he wrote on X. “A stable grid means the AC stays on, and lives are saved. Let’s ease demand — and get through the heat — together.” New York: it's hot out there, and the power grid is working overtime to keep us cool.Set your AC to 78 degrees, turn off lights/electronics you're not using, and unplug what you can.Our City is doing its part too: maintaining the 78 degrees rule in our buildings,… For the record, the Department of Energy says the sweet spot for AC energy efficiency during heat waves is between 75 and 78 degrees. And a failed power grid could lead to greater instances of heat illness and death. Although the Public Utility Commission of Texas has also made that recommendation, the fact that it was coming from a democratic socialist like Mamdani was apparently a sign that all that is good and decent in the good old U.S. of A. was being ripped to shreds. Of course, many of the conservatives griping about Mamdani’s request to New Yorkers don’t actually live in New York, but, hey, details. First AOC tried to come for your steak and ribs and now the Socialist Democrats are coming for your AC. This is the future that WOKE Democrats want not just for NYC but for South Carolina too! https://t.co/s6u93omj2p This is what socialism looks like, folks. The right answer isn’t restrictions or mandates. It’s drilling, fracking, coal, & nuclear. That’s how we’ll roll in Ohio.(And he sounds eerily just like Amy Acton during Covid). https://t.co/pJyw0Y3V8e 78 degrees??? Welcome to communism people! Hope you enjoy! https://t.co/F8KLz9398u Welcome to socialism, where the government demands you turn your house into a sauna because they can't plan for the super unpredictable fact that it tends to get hot in the summer. https://t.co/lj7PhXMyco 78 degrees? My AC does not go above 68 in the summer. This is America for God’s sake. https://t.co/vJ4XuTK05o Recent Los Angeles mayoral candidate Spencer Pratt lashed out at the unfairness of it all in two separate posts. Communism always goes the same way. They smile & promise you the world. Free this, free that, abundance for all! How? Don't ask! Then they get into power, and the rationing begins. First a smiley ask. Then a demand. Then a bullet. "You used too much energy, comrade" https://t.co/lyXZq62rwN Show us your thermostat, commie https://t.co/nVOVtbFQdD Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) hoped to make hay at Mamdani’s expense, only to get hit with a pesky community note that pointed out Texas makes the same recommendation. In a first-world country, you could turn on the A/C…. https://t.co/J1PELJOTzx Other GOP figures also weighed in... Florida's Realtor of the Year! https://t.co/BD3iGiPfF6 Turns out socialism actually isn’t free. https://t.co/TeY2x8czfe Denver, this is what you just voted for. https://t.co/hlgaGkfKiy The joys of socialism 🫠 https://t.co/bjc2Oa37yU This is the stark scarcity of Socialism. New York is a state of extraordinary abundance in energy, power, and natural resources. Yet it is only because of the failed policies crushing our state’s energy independence that we have to settle for this Third World scarcity. The… https://t.co/CxhJ3dWTxM This is the worst campaign ad for the Democrats. Set your air to 78 degrees? Bless your hearts New York City!!American energy should be so strong and plentiful that you never have to set it above 70 if you don’t feel like it. And this comes from the Deep South in Georgia!! https://t.co/FK13i4sbLS No thanks. This is America. We crank our A/C down to 60 whenever we please. https://t.co/PZwkhZQsMr Former South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley (R) also tried to go the “everything I hate is socialism” route ... Welcome to socialism https://t.co/ekgMH3ARh4 ...
