(NewsNation) — Former attorney Justin Nadeau has been sentenced to 7.5 to 15 years in New Hampshire State Prison for inducing hundreds of thousands of dollars from his brain-injured client under false pretenses.

Shawn Fahey hired Nadeau after her vehicle was struck by an intoxicated driver, resulting in a traumatic brain injury. Nadeau proceeded to convince Fahey to give him close to $300,000 in loans, according to a press release from the New Hampshire Department of Justice.

“It’s difficult for me to imagine something worse for a lawyer to do,” said a member of the New Hampshire Supreme Court Professional Conduct Committee in court records.

After the New Hampshire Attorney Discipline Office started investigating Nadeau, he began concealing his misconduct by fabricating documentation, producing false electronic file metadata, destroying and/or concealing his computer, and forging his then-wife’s signature on a backdated promissory note.

Nadeau was convicted on 15 felony charges, including theft by deception, financial exploitation of a disabled adult, falsification of physical evidence, and forgery, according to the press release.

Nadeau’s sentences consisted of two concurrent sentences of 5 to 10 years in the New Hampshire State Prison on the Financial Exploitation charges, as well as a consecutive sentence of 2.5 to 5 years in the New Hampshire State Prison on five of the Falsification of Physical Evidence charges.
