CHICAGO — Funeral services for a fallen Chicago firefighter have been postponed after his widow went into labor.

Services for firefighter/EMT Michael Altman were scheduled to take place on Friday morning, but officials announced on Thursday that they had been postponed after Altman’s wife went into labor.

The Chicago Fire Department said Thursday’s visitation at St. Rita of Cascia Shrine Chapel, located at 7740 South Western Avenue, will be held as planned from 3 p.m. to 8 p.m.

It is currently unclear when the postponed service will take place.

Altman was badly injured last week while battling a fire on the city’s Far North Side.

According to officials, the blaze erupted around 11:30 a.m. Monday in the 1700 block of West North Shore Avenue in Rogers Park.

Crews were on the scene in just three minutes, but by that point, two floors of the building were already engulfed in flames.

While battling the flames, Altman was injured when the floor beneath him collapsed.

Altman was rescued in less than a minute but was hospitalized with severe burns and died the next day.

Altman, a fourth-generation firefighter who had served with the Chicago Fire Department for nearly two years, leaves behind his young son and wife, who was just days away from delivering their second child.
