Major crash closes only bridge to one of Texas' most popular beaches

All traffic has been halted on the Queen Isabella Memorial Causeway - the singular bridge connecting South Padre Island to the rest of the Rio Grande Valley - after a crash that involved a Texas Parks and Wildlife Department vehicle late Wednesday afternoon. South Padre Island City Manager Randy Smith confirmed to MySA that the two-vehicle crash involved a state vehicle driven by a Texas game warden, who sustained injuries and was transported to a local hospital. Another person was also injured in the crash and transported to a hospital, though the conditions of neither are known. South Padre Island police, the South Padre Island Fire Department, EMS crews from both the island and Port Isabel, and the Texas Department of Public Safety responded to the scene, Smith and Port Isabel Police Chief Robert Lopez confirmed to MySA. The crash prompted the temporary closure of the bridge in both directions, in part, to allow first responders to access the scene, but also because "debris went over the barricade… the separation point" that divides the two directions of traffic, Smith said. The crash occurred just after 4 p.m. in the middle of Texas Week, the busiest week of the Spring Break season, which typically draws tens of thousands of college students, families and other visitors to the most popular beach in Texas. The four-lane causeway is the only bridge connecting South Padre Island to the mainland, meaning it often becomes congested during peak tourist seasons, like Spring Break. Thus far this year, traffic on the bridge has been moderate - a far cry from the hours-long bumper-to-bumper traffic that once was common during Spring Break, both Smith and Lopez said. Crews are still on scene awaiting the removal of the two vehicles as DPS investigates the crash, Smith said.
