3 hurt, 1 critical after crash, car fire on Interstate 40 West in Greensboro: ‘Never seen anything like that in my entire life’

GREENSBORO, N.C. (WGHP) — Drivers on Interstate 40 West were experiencing delays due to a crash and fire that closed that side of the interstate, according to the North Carolina Department of Transportation. The scene of the crash was at Mile Marker 208 near Exit 208 for Sandy Ridge Road. I-40 West was closed at NC 68, and the left two lanes of I-40 East were also closed as a result of the crash. Buc-ee’s exec says ‘We will have more stores in North Carolina’ Traffic camera footage showed a large vehicle fire near the median of the I-40. Traffic camera footage also showed that flames have been brought down significantly Traffic backup due to the crash and closure extended back up into US 421 near Bunker Hill Road. Guilford County EMS says that three people were injured in the crash, and two of them were taken to the hospital. One of the people who was taken to the hospital with injuries is considered to be critical, and the other two’s injuries are minor. Rachel Campbell was driving on I-40 East when something caught her eye, and she saw the crash happen. She said it’s something she will never forget. “The small, dark colored SUV driving at full speed the wrong way in the lane and hit the work truck with the bucket on it head on,” Campbell said. “The car did explode into a very large fire, and it was probably at least 25 feet high, and I have never seen anything like that in my entire life.” She said she saw a ball of fire at least 25 feet high.
