(FOX40.COM) — The Nevada County Coroner’s Office, along with the Sierra Avalanche Center, released new details in the avalanche that killed nine people below Perry Peak near Fog Lake.

The coroner’s office confirmed with FOX40 that “no one” involved was wearing an avalanche airbag system during the incident.

On Feb. 17, 15 backcountry travelers were involved in an avalanche in the Central Sierra Nevada. Nine people were killed and six others were rescued and survived.

New details from the Sierra Avalanche Center reveal that the victims were buried in a 20-by-20-foot area near the toe of the avalanche debris, around 5 to 8 feet below the surface.

“The party was buried in a small depression in the terrain, bounded by trees and boulders, which likely allowed debris to pile up in that small area,” officials said.

It was measured that the burial location to the estimated starting zone was at around a 22 to 25 degree angle. Meanwhile, the slope angle where the avalanche likely began was around 36 to 40 degrees, the center said.

What triggered the avalanche, along with its slab thickness, depth and width, remains unknown. Officials said the information may never be known, as the storm buried evidence.

The data was gathered on Feb. 27 when Sierra Avalanche Center forecasters and SAR teams returned to the area and dug out the victims’ remaining equipment, which mostly consisted of skis and poles.

The victims were identified as the following:

Carrie Atkin, 46, of Soda Springs, California

Lizabeth Clabaugh, 52, of Boise, Idaho

Danielle Keatley, 44, of Soda Springs and Larkspur, California

Kate Morse, 45, of Soda Springs and Tiburon, California

Caroline Sekar, 45, of Soda Springs and San Francisco, California

Katherine Vitt. 43, of Greenbrea, California

Andrew Alissandratos, 34, of Verdi, Nevada

Michael Henry, 30, of Soda Springs, California

Nicole Choo, 42, of South Lake Tahoe, California

The center is now addressing the avalanche as the Perry Peak Avalanche, formerly known as the Castle Peak avalanche.
