Henkell Freixenet has taken full ownership of Freixenet, increasing its 50% stake in the cava producer to 100%.

The share sale by the founding Ferrer family and José Luis Bonet was completed on Monday (2 March) by “mutual agreement”, according to a statement from the sparkling wine group.

Financial details of the transaction were not disclosed.

In 2018, Germany-based Henkell & Co, owned by Dr Oetker, acquired 50.67% of Spain’s Freixenet.

However, after a capital increase by Freixenet president José Ferrer Sala, he and fellow shareholder José Luis Bonet secured collective ownership of 50% of Freixenet’s share capital, with Henkell holding the other 50%.

Henkell & Co changed its name in 2019 to Henkell Freixenet to mark its majority purchase of Freixenet.

Andreas Brokemper, CEO of Henkell Freixenet, said: “Over the past eight years, a relationship founded on trust and collaboration has evolved into a unified team with a shared vision – committed to develop the brand Freixenet and the company towards a sustainable future. Together, we have strengthened our international market position in the global sparkling wine segment and opened new opportunities for Freixenet.”

Pedro Ferrer and José Luis Bonet will continue their association with the company as “honorary” presidents, the company said.

Founding family member Pedro Ferrer will also “represent Freixenet in some institutions”.

Following the sale of their stake, Ferrer and Luis Bonet will increase their investment in Ferrer Wines, a Spanish winemaker owned and managed by Pedro Ferrer.

"At the same time, I am excited to continue developing Ferrer Wines and to shape the next chapter of our wine journey.”
